Dakota was 3 months old when we were looking for a muzzle for her. She was very aggressive and we were especially concerned since she was so young. You could not go near her when she was given a bone, she was extremely possessive of her food and she growled at the vet on her first visit. We were at a point we didn’t know what to do. While choosing a muzzle at our local pet store they offered us Mike’s business card. To this day it is the best call we ever made! We joined Mike’s Obedience Training that week. She picked up the training quickly and loved going each week. In the beginning Mike would also work with us on Dakota’s behavioural issues. He would offer different suggestions and we would work on them during the week and follow up the next time we were there. For the first few weeks nothing seemed to work, and then Mike suggested having Dakota self feed. We did and now she is not so possessive with her food. She doesn’t mind so much having people around when she is eating, because she knows the food is always available. She is able to have her bones to chew on as well. She needs those first few minutes alone with the bones, but then she brings them over to have you hold them while she chews, not something we would normally be thrilled about, but we like to encourage her to share. It was not long before we started to see her aggression turn around and she became a completely different dog, a happy dog. Mike also works with everyone on an Examine command for the dogs. She is now able to go to the vet with no problems. We even had to have her x-rayed once and the vet did not have to use any anesthetic, Dakota just allowed her to do her job.
It was a lot of hard work and discipline on our part but we really enjoyed the quality time with Dakota. It really paid off. We can take her anywhere with us and not worry. She is now almost 2 years old and we get compliments all the time on what a well mannered dog she is. If it wasn’t for Mike I don’t know how we would have coped. We had quite a few hurdles to conquer and Mike was there through each of them.
Last summer we joined Mike’s Apparatus training. She easily learned the tunnels and the A-frame. The jumps we started at one bar and she is at three this season. Her biggest challenges last year were the stairs, plank and the Teeter Totter. By the end of the season last year she accomplished the stairs. This season she will continue to work on the plank and the Teeter Totter. We love it and so does she. We will continue working with Mike this season and continue working towards completing the apparatus training.
Mike is not just about obedience, he is there to help you and your dog with any issues or challenges you may be having. He truly cares and wants everyone, dog and owner to have a happy, healthy relationship. And that is what we have with Dakota. We could not ask for more.
