Odin was born on September 14, 2004 and I got him when he was 7 weeks old. He was a little white ball of fluff that tried to follow me everywhere. Odin grew quite quickly and soon realized that there was a big world to explore. I quickly learned that Odin had a lovely temperament, was quite intelligent and enjoyed people’s company but he would not listen to me when he was off lead outside. He spent several nights outside because he would not come in when it was time for bed, and I refused to give him any satisfaction in playing the “game”. When Odin was about a year old, my Mother heard about Mike through her cousin, who was having excellent results with her female Weimaraner. My Mother phoned mike one day while I was at work and explained the situation that I was having with Odin. Mike assured her that with the proper training and effort that Odin could become the dog that I wanted him to be. For my birthday gift that year, I received the best training that money can buy. When I first started with Odin, we attained some results, but quite slowly. During the training sessions, I saw a number of other people and their dogs that were much further along in their training and I remember thinking to myself that Odin and I could never reach that level. There were people that could actually walk there dogs with no lead, I was amazed at the obedience. At that time Odin was a holy terror if he ever escaped from the house with no lead. It sometimes took me hours to get him back. Odin’s behaviour was acceptable in the car and in the house, but it was outside, where there was little consequence to his actions, that we needed a lot of improvement. My work schedule and the distance to Mike’s limited the number of times Odin and I were able to see him, and at times there were several months between visits. But I always worked with Odin on the things that we knew during those times. Looking back, I think that Odin needed the extra time anyway, he is very independent and did not want to do what I asked of him. He had to be made to do what I wanted. Only recently does Odin look for praise after performing a command. I have no doubt that we would not have been able to accomplish a tenth as much without Mike’s teaching and system of correct and reward. Odin and I still have much to learn, but I can finally take him for walks without a lead. The effort that I have put in to Odin’s training has been worth it many times over, he is now a joy (most of the time) to be around.
Thanks very much Mike!
