Riley

We like to call him “Riley Coyote”, our black and white young male Cocker Spaniel, or should we say “cocky” spaniel. When we picked Riley up at the breeders when he was 10 weeks old we had the opportunity to “Meet the Parents” and should have guessed then he would be a handful. Mom was pretty calm, laid back and elegant looking, and then there was Dad, like Riley a matching black and white wild man flying around his pen. You’ve all heard the saying, like father like son. Well Riley, as cute as he was, was no exception to that rule. We were not ready for the uncontrolled energy flying around the house, yard or anywhere he unleashed himself. Having owned two previous relatively well behaved mild mannered female spaniels, Riley was a mitt full. There was nothing young Riley did not want to tear to pieces, all types of footwear, articles of furniture, cords, rugs and yes hands and feet. Riley loved to take us for a walk or drag me down the street, a small ball of uncontrolled energy at the end of a leash. He failed puppy school at the local Petsmart and was sent home from the first two groomers, who gave up on him after a few quick minutes trying to give him a trim. It was starting to look like Riley was going to have to rejoin his father bouncing off the walls of his pen. With 2 small grandchildren we were afraid he might want to hang by his teeth from one of their ears, not to mention knock them over when he hurled himself at them in is uncontrolled excitement. Alas, we were failures and contemplating giving up on little Riley and then ta da, we hear about “The Wolfman”

Early one July evening we took Riley to meet Mike, me hopeful that The Wolfman would be able to save me from my dog, my husband much more skeptical that he would just fail this class to. After our first half hour session with Mike we had begun our training and confident that Riley would follow. The initial results were almost instant, small steps but steps forward. Riley and my husband were doing well. With each visit Riley’s behavior improved. Weekly and regular visits to Mike and Karen progressively transformed Riley from the wild uncontrolled Riley to a keeper. Riley “Sit”, Riley “down”, Riley ‘Stay”, Riley “Heel”. I never would have believed it, but he actually does all those things. From a wild uncontrolled frenzy of fury our Riley now walks off leash, obeys commands most of time, is well behaved and a joy to have. I overhear people say while at Mike’s classes how good Riley is. Proud mother! There is still lots of work to do, continual training but the change in Riley’s behavior in these last 4-5 months has been tremendous. Mike’s approach and methods have worked wonders. The training experience has been very rewarding and very enjoyable. We have all benefited from the classes, my husband has been almost as successful as Riley and work continues with both of them.

Mike, Karen and The Wolfman K9 Obedience School have provided the skills and training only a professional could provide. We have had a dog for a pet for much of our lives and had for the first time worried it was time to call it quits. Riley is a new dog and will be a member of our family for years to come thanks to Mike.
