2 December 2007 - Featured Dog - Lucky

Lucky

Lucky was born November 19th, 2005 and he is a Beagle/Old English Bulldog cross. We picked Lucky up at 6 weeks old. This was a new experience for us as we had never had a dog before, only cats. We took our new dog to puppy school, where he passed and then onto Grade 1, which he also passed. At five months old, Lucky dashed out of the house, onto the road, into the side of a moving van. The outcome was a broken pelvis. The Vet Doctor that examined Lucky said that we had two options: one was to do surgery, which would be extremely costly, or two, because Lucky was still a puppy, and they heal very quickly, we could crate him for six to eight weeks, which meant carrying him in and out of his crate to the outdoors. This took a lot of patience; however we perservered. Sure enough, after six weeks of carrying him in and out and keeping him quiet, he was running, jumping, and doing everything a puppy would do. Lucky, at this point, had forgotten all his training skills. In fact, he was almost impossible to have around the house. We worked with Lucky but were not making any or very little progress. One day while on our walk, we were blindsided by another dog. Now we have another problem – dog aggression – with every dog he saw. I was at my wits end and about to give Lucky away or just give up. My brother and his wife, God bless them, suggested I speak with Mike Martin, a dog trainer that had solved the problems they had with their dog Cassie, a badly abused rescue. We called and went to see Mike for an assessment of Lucky. Mike stated that Lucky would require a lot of work, partly because of his breed, but assured us he is very trainable and would be a great dog. We noticed immediate progress on the first visit with Mike and that was only the interview! We were more than ready to begin.

We have been training under the professional advice of Mike for about five months and Lucky has become a loving and obedient dog. Lucky will Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Fetch, Down-stay, Sit-stay, and almost anything you could ask of a dog. He will also go to and in his crate without hesitation. This was something else he didn’t like after his accident. One other thing, Mike not only trains dogs, he also trains the owners and that is hard to do – just ask my wife! As Mike said at the start of the training – ??”TRAINING NEVER ENDS”.?? We are still working on the aggression problem, but it is getting better every day.

Mike is like magic with all breeds of dogs. He shows so much love towards them as well as stern training. He certainly earned our respect in the ability to love and understand our dog LUCKY!

We would like to thank (Wolfman) Mike Martin for giving us a wonderful and loving dog that we trust with our grandchildren and everyone he meets. There is a lot to learn and Mike has taught us more than we could have ever imagined.

You can give our names to anyone as a reference.

Thanks Mike!
